Artist Thomas Coffey has enjoyed attending art classes through the services of UCP WORK, Inc. since 2014.  His medium of choice is acrylic painting, but due to the challenge of holding and moving a regular paintbrush in steady strokes, Studio Manager, Jacob Allio, experimented and developed adapted art tools for Thomas to paint with. By using items he could find around the studio, Jacob wrapped paper towels and painters' tape around the paintbrush handle, which helped increase Thomas’ ability to hold it, but there were still some accommodations to be made.

Despite the stigma often surrounding people with developmental disabilities, John Houston, a resident artist at Santa Barbara Art Works in Downtown’s arts district, has a photographic memory, and a tenacious desire to share his work with others.  “I want to show you my drawings!”, replied John, an individual served by UCP WORK, Inc., a service provider that offers integrated employment programs for adults with disabilities residing in the Tri-Counties.  John attends art classes at the agency’s art studio twice a week, while also participating in the many programs offered at UCP WORK, Inc., such as volunteering in the community, life-skills training, and outings to the city’s libraries and museums.

“Princess” Reiko Karl had never painted or participated in any type of art class before attending Santa Barbara Art Works. Through the support of UCP WORK, Inc., she’s been coming to the Integrated Arts Program for 2 years, having started at the studio’s previous location, Sundial Artsfe. She feels the experience has really changed her life, “I used to think I was just going to end up at home doing nothing, but here at program, I get to learn all types of art, like using a grid to plan out my drawings, and how to mix and blend colors.” Reiko also stated that she appreciates the exercise she gets by walking to class and that students are given the opportunity to go out into the community for field trips.
