Helping People become Independent

High School Transition Program

High School Transition Program

In collaboration with Tri-Counties Regional Center and the Santa Maria School District, UCP WORK provides independent living skills training to high school seniors with disabilities. Rather than attending the traditional classroom, these students report to class every day at a condominium in Santa Maria. Conveniently, the condo is located next to public transportation and within walking distance from the city college (Hancock). This program is the first of its kind in the State of California and provides a unique learning experience for the class participants. The students meet their teacher every day at the condo; from there they complete all academic graduation requirements as well as gain vocational and social skills. Two consecutive evenings a week, four students have the opportunity to spend the night under the supervision of UCP WORK staff. In the evening students learn about the importance of healthy nutrition, grocery shopping, budgeting, cooking and housekeeping (including laundry). The students also learn to live with others cooperatively and be contributing citizens by carrying part of the responsibility of running a responsible household. This program has received high accolades from Supported Life Institute and the success rate of students moving in to their own homes is exceptional.

UCP WORK, Inc. staff provide training in all facets of supported living, such as:

  • Nutrition and menu planning
  • Grocery shopping
  • Meal preparation
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Accessing community resources and social enrichment

The HILL House program has been highly successful – collaborations such as these are very rare, but the team continues year after year, to fine tune the experience and ensure that program participants are ready for the next step in their lives.
