Mentor Program

Our Mentor Program offers the chance to make real friendships with others with common interests and also provides an opportunity to be mentored by someone who treats our participants as a peer rather than as a “client,” with whom participants are able to seek guidance and discuss any of life’s many challenges.

We view experiential learning as a necessity in carrying out our organizational goal of integrating people with disabilities into their local communities. This program provides trips throughout the year to sporting events, museums, a wide array of outdoor natural settings, live music, dance performances, multi-cultural events, movies, plays and a large assortment of other recreational venues and activities. The program schedules potential overnight trips to Oregon, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Big Sur, Monterey and San Diego, to name a few.

The Mentor outings are offered usually at no cost or minimal cost to participants. In most situations, a contribution of a portion of the cost is requested from those who might be able to pitch in. We make it a point to never turn anyone away from participating if their participation presents them with any sort of financial burden. The majority of people in our program exists on very low or fixed incomes and could never afford to have many of the experiences that we provide for little or no cost. The majority of expenses are borne by our program.

Our program participants experience a variety of physical/mental challenges including Downs Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, muscular dystrophy, hearing and vision impairment and an assortment of neurological conditions. Our Mentor outings typically include 2 to 5 participants and timely one to one sessions as they are needed. We are increasing this service by arranging for participants within this program to match up with younger participants who can benefit from their attention and positive energy. This program thrives on connecting people and providing mutually beneficial experiences for all of our participants.
